ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (ACCD)

The Allegheny Conference on Community Development and its Affiliates work in collaboration with public and private sector partners to stimulate economic growth and enhance the quality of life in southwestern Pennsylvania. CITY OF PITTSBURGH (Department of City Planning)

PHIPPS CONSERVATORY & BOTANICAL GARDENS, INC.

The Phipps Conservatory was built in 1893 by Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. The Conservatory was to provide the citizens of Pittsburgh with a source of instruction and pleasure and stipulated that it must be open on Sundays so that workers could visit on their day of rest. A number of improvements were made over the years culminating in changing the name to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to reflect these changes. A new 10,088 s.f. green engineered welcome center was opened in March of 2005. Planning is underway for a state of the art production green houses and a one-of-a-kind tropical forest conservatory.

PORT AUTHORITY OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY (PAT)


PAT was established by legislation enacted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1956 (as amended in 1959) to develop an integrated mass transportation system for Allegheny County. By 1964, most public transit in Allegheny County was operated by Port Authority. Today, Port Authority, in addition to providing daily bus, rail and incline service, is engaged in a number of initiatives such as constructing park and rIde lots, construction of the North Shore Connector, an extension of the rail system and participating in the Eastern Corridor Transit Study Transitional Analysis.

WESTERN PA SCHOOL FOR BLIND CHILDREN

The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children was founded more than 100 years ago as a facility to provide the best education possible for boys and girls who were blind. The School has never wavered from this mandate. Today, in addition to blindness, the students who enroll here have other severe disabilities, and the educational program is tailored to their needs. The School for Blind Children is a private school, chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is located in the heart of Pittsburgh and serves students from the western half of Pennsylvania.
